What I Ate Wednesday! Healthy Habits for a New Year!

It’s been forever since I’ve posted on a Wednesday and I’m definitely excited to be back to What I Ate Wednesday.  The holidays have come and gone, like years passed my holidays were marked with lots of good homemade food!  I definitely indulged a bit here and there and enjoyed every minute of it.  This year is marked with some new changes to our eating habits.  Michael and I are cutting out most sugar and carbs in an effort to help Michael lose weight.

Cutting out sugar is not something I’d ever thought I’d do but I’m actually enjoying it.  Cutting sugar out of my coffee was the biggest thing for me.  I was surprised when I tried coffee with milk and no sugar at how good it was.  I honestly didn’t notice much of a difference.  I’ve tried baking a few things with agave, honey and maple syrup.  I made cranberry orange muffins which were pretty good but definitely denser and heavier than your normal muffin.  I also made brownies with agave nectar and unsweetened sugar which were so chocolately and delicious! Definitely a success.  I’m kind of looking forward to playing around with the natural sweeteners more!



Aside from sugar-free coffee I’ve been hooked on eggs with avocado, salsa, sour cream.  It’s delicious!  I love it in a whole wheat wrap or on top of some quinoa! It’s been a change from my normal breakfasts.  Blackberries have been on sale in the store lately and I’ve been loving it.  They are one of my favorite fruits!

Lunch has definitely been filled with lots of leftovers.  I had some leftover potato and leek soup with Goldfish, pineapples, blackberries, an apple and a little bit of sugar-free brownie.

I’ve been loving Perrier water lately.  I get really bored with drinking water throughout the day but don’t like drinks high in calories or sugar like soda and Gatorade.  Perrier water is the perfect substitute for me as its calorie and sugar-free! With varieties like lemon, lime and grapefruit I never get bored.  And I’m kind of obsessed with the slim cans! They are so cute!


We had this for dinner weeks ago, well before Christmas but it was just so good I couldn’t help but share it today.  We made pizza at home with homemade sauce on it and mozzarella.  The crust was so crispy and delicious and the pizza as a whole was out of this world! I told Michael we can’t order take out anymore, ours was that good!

On the side we had caesar salad.  And since it was Friday night we had some delicious red wine!

    I’ve been cutting out sugar since the new year and have been surprised by how much easier it’s become. For me, I eat way too much dessert, so I’ve been avoiding cookies, ice cream, etc. I’m hoping to cleanse for about a month or so and then only go back to eating desserts/sweets when it’s something I really want, like red velvet cake. Good luck to you in your journey!

    I love this post and so excited to see what healthy recipes you continue to share in the coming year. We have been preparing egg white omelettes with cherry tomatoes and spinach. Soooo yummy. We are a virtually sugar free household now except for my hot cocoa in the evening which I make with 100% organic cocoa and just two tsps of organic sugar. My favorite treat is a Bonnieville cookie. We’ve been doing tons of fruit salad. My daughter has been on a blackberry kick as well. Here’s to a healthy New Year filled with love, light, joy and happiness.
