Keeping Balanced and Lean Protein

Happy Tuesday!  Welcome back to work all you lucky people who had yesterday off! I’m just a little bit jealous, not going to lie.  I did manage to have a very relaxing night after work.  I went to yoga and had a very peaceful practice and caught the new episode of Gossip Girl! I love that show.  I have watched it from the beginning and continue to love it.  Anyway…let’s talk yoga for a minute shall we?

Last Wednesday I took an awesome class at South Boston Yoga with Michael.  We did a lot of spinal twists and I was able to get into this pose but I was revolved in my upper body so much that both shoulder blades were touching the ground.

I tried to take a photo of myself in the pose but it was so hard to set up a good one and take it on timer and it was too painful with my back…sorry loves!

The instructor came around and helped deepen the pose for me, he twisted me deeper so that both shoulders ended up on the floor.  Awesome, right?  Definitely! Except that I was only twisted deeper in one direction.  And when I got twisted it tweaked my back.  So since Wednesday I’ve been walking around in pain on only one side.  I’ve been taking ibuprofen to help with the pain but at times it is very painful and uncomfortable.   I feel completely imbalanced.  I took yoga last night hoping to balance things out but it only helped a little bit.  It’s getting better day by day but it will take some time. When you are practicing yoga please keep in mind that it is all about balance.  What you do to the left you must do to the right.   Additionally if an instructor puts you into a deeper pose, be sure to have them do it on both sides!  They should remember this but often in larger classes they can get distracted and forget but remind them if necessary.  Balance, balance, balance!  And as always if it doesn’t feel good or it too intense always come out of it!!

Today I also wanted to talk about Lean Protein.  As you all know I am a FitFluential Ambassador.  FitFluential has been partnering with GNC lately.  You may have seen the #livewellnow hashtag or Twitter chats.  A few weeks ago I asked to try some of the GNC Total Lean Product.  Protein, particularly protein powder is not something I regularly take or use so I was interested in giving it a shot.  GNC recommends the following according to the label:

As a meal replacement, add two scoops (48 grams) to 8 fl. oz. of cold water. Mix well. Drink two shakes daily while following the provided Meal and Exercise Plan.

They sent me two kinds.  The powder to mix my own with water and pre-mixed ready to drink ones.

I first tried the pre-mixed ones.  The flavor was Vanilla Bean.  I used it as an afternoon snack before a speed workout a couple of weeks ago.  The flavor was really good and the consistency was ok.  It kind of tasted like drinking milk.  It definitely left me feeling full and satisfied. I would definitely drink them again and use them as an afternoon snack.  I tried the powder and mixing it at home.  I had a hard time mixing it up so all the powder was dissolved.  In the end I gave up and threw in the blender.  After I did that it was like a shake and the consistency was good.  The chocolate flavor was ok.  I actually thought it tasted like protein.  I didn’t really enjoy that taste.  After that I sort of gave up on drinking the protein powder.  I do want to try to add it to a smoothie with fruit or something else.  I think it might taste a little better mixed with something else.  All in all, I just really learned that protein isn’t really for me.  I’m more of a fresh, fruit and veggies kind of girl and I like my protein in the form of eggs, chicken and red meat.

GNC also sent me the On-The-Go-Blender-Deluxe.  This little 15 piece set has become one of my new favorites in the kitchen!

I really love the all the different sized containers and the blender itself is great.  It is small and compact yet it as powerful as a bigger blender.  I’ve been using it to make smoothies for a snack.  I’ve been adding greek yogurt, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries with a touch of orange juice!
