What I Ate Wednesday! Craving Comfort Foods!

Standard

Can you believe it is the last Wednesday in August? Seriously where does time go?! This also means it is the last Wednesday for the Summer Staples theme.  That just makes me sad…summers always seem to go too quickly now and I often find myself longing to be a kid again playing 4-square after dinner on a warm summer night and spending the entire day in the water and sun.  Oh such a nice day-dream….

In reality I’ve been craving lots of comfort foods lately.  And smoothies but they aren’t really a comfort food.  In fact the other day I made a good old-fashioned peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a glass of milk for lunch.  It did not disappoint and I might just have to have another one for lunch one day soon!

Breakfast.

I found my all time favorite smoothie recipe over the weekend…strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, 1/2 avocado, apple juice and coconut water.  So so so good!

Smoothie!

Also this weekend…a warm bowl of oats with almond butter, jam, raisins and blueberries.  Yep, it was finally “cold” enough to be craving oats!  Truth: those oats made me excited for the fall and cool weather!

Lunch.

Lunches have been boring lame.  I did spice up a wrap with some breaded chicken tenders, lettuce, cucumber, cheese and honey mustard.  That was pretty good.  Goldfish (comfort food if you ask me), red grapes, Chobani yogurt and a granola bar to go with it.  I usually chose between the Chobani and the granola bar for an afternoon snack.  Morning snack has been water and fruit salad (yum!).

Dinner.

Homemade baked breaded chicken tenders, Alexa sweet potato puffs, coleslaw, and salad with a glass of milk.  Comfort food at it’s finest. Ya know, the more I type comfort food I’m realizing it’s really foods I ate as a kid and can’t get enough of lately.

Dessert.

We had some friends over for a barbecue on Sunday.  We made cheeseburger sliders, crab cake sliders, cucumber tomato salad, coleslaw, and homemade sweet potato fries for dinner.  For dessert we made s’mores but dressed it up a bit….s’more pizza!  It was delicious! On to the crust went some butter, graham crackers that I blended in the food processor, chocolate chips and mini marshmallows.  It was so good! Not health but so worth it!

What have you been craving lately? What comfort kid foods do have to have every now and then? Can you believe it’s the last Wednesday in August?!

Saying See Ya Later to My Favorite Place to Run!

Standard

Happy Friday Friends! I’m excited for the weekend! My brother is coming down today to help us move tomorrow and I’m really looking forward to hanging out with him in Boston after work.  You do have to mix work with pleasure! Tomorrow is the big day and I’ll be thrilled to be all settled.  Moving is no fun.  The weather is supposed to be gorgeous this weekend so I hope to get some time to enjoy it!

The other day I discovered a wonderful little snack that I’m loving late afternoon at my desk.  I took my usual Greek yogurt, added a scoop of peanut butter from my stash and then crumbled up my granola bar on top.  It was so good and now I’m kind of addicted! I’m not sure why I never considered combining the yogurt and granola bar before! Anyway, that little tidbit made my week and I would say it is definitely sensible snacking!

I originally was going to do a Yoga Pose post but that can wait until next week.  Today we need to bid farewell to my favorite running loop. I’ve been blessed to have lived in the Back Bay of Boston for the last three years and with that I am able to enjoy not only the Esplanade but also the Boston Common and the Commonwealth mall.  With all three parks so close I am able to run surrounded by nature and water all the time.

Wednesday night I went for an easy 4 mile run.  When I left it felt like every other run.  I ran down Beacon St. and came to the Mass Ave. bridge and then it hit me.  It would be my last run from my apartment. I KNOW I’ll come back and run along the Esplanade on the weekends every now and then because I love it THAT much but it was still bittersweet.  It got me thinking about how running routes can be like our best friends.  They are reliable, safe (if not it’s probably not a good route) and always there for us (barring inclement weather like a Nor’easter or hurricane).

Within moments of running by the water I can feel myself physically relax.  My mind calms and my breathing softens and it’s just me and the pavement.  I love that feeling and most days that is what gets me out there in the sun, rain, warm or cold.  On Wednesday, my commute took an extra half hour (oy, Boston traffic!) and I considered skipping my run.  I had a lot of packing to do and a million other excuses.  But after I got out of the car I knew I NEEDED that run.  I’m so glad I ran because it was a day where I felt like I could run forever and felt amazing…perfect for my last run on the Esplanade.

Last Run on the Esplanade!

I know my route and loops like the back of my hand.  There is the easy 3 mile loop, 2 versions of a 4 mile loop, 2 versions of a 5 mile loop, a 6 mile loop, an 8 mile loop, a 10 mile loop out to Harvard and back and if I’m marathon training there can be loops as long as 20 miles around the river and parks of Boston.  I’m able to just set out for a run with no set distance decided.  I can cut off and make the run shorter if I feel crappy or I can keep running and make the run longer if I feel awesome.  It’s kind of like the perfect situation.  I can set myself into auto-pilot and just go. I can get lost in my thoughts or in the view of the sailboats.  I know where every bump is and step down is and running whether or not is dark or light out doesn’t matter because it’s lit.

So Easy To Get Lost in the Sailboats!

Sunny days are awesome with the sun sparkling over the water and the warmth on my face.  Rainy days are my favorite, the paths are empty and only die-hard runners are out there.  Boston is covered in fog and it’s so quiet and peaceful.  It’s calm in a way you never thought a city could be.  Wednesday was rainy and at first I was a little disappointed but then I realized I was thrilled.  It was the perfect way to say see ya later to my favorite route.  I love stopping at one of the docks and standing on it all alone listening to the sound of the rain on the water and stretching my legs.  Taking a minute for just me and me alone.  God, I love that.

So today, I say see ya later (never goodbye) to the Esplanade loops (as they are dubbed in my Garmin software).  You’ve been one of the best friends a girl could have living in the city.  You were my company when I knew no one, the best friend I needed when the going was tough.  You gave me a place to think, to run out my emotion, to take in the beauty of Boston, to be happy and to enjoy the sunshine.  And most of all, you were always there for me.

I only hope that my new town will have good loops and provide me with all the things the Esplanade did! From what I hear, there is a pretty picturesque lake close by and I’m itching to check it out.  Saying goodbye to my favorite loops can be hard since I’ve never loved a running location quite as much as this.  But I’m a positive person and am reminding myself that finding new running routes can be just as fun!

So tell me, what was your most favorite running spot? Were you sad to leave it behind or are you still lucky enough to run there? Do you feel like your running loops can be like your best friend?

What I Ate Wednesday! The Last of Veggie Love!

What I Ate Wednesday! The Last of Veggie Love!

Hey Guys! Happy Wednesday to you all! I’m coming off of a runny nose and quite the sneezes today. Luckily it hasn’t gotten in the way of my runs and training. That fact alone makes me happy! I did skip yoga yesterday so I didn’t over do it and slept in as late as possible today.  Hopefully this cold is kicked by the weekend! I have lots of fun stuff planned with Michael and our friends in addition to my 13 miler! I also wanted to tell you all that I LOVED all your comments my Favorite Things Post from yesterday!  It appears that the variety was well received, maybe I’ll do another one like that soon.

Who is psyched that it is leap day and the last day of February?! I’m personally ready to move on to March. I’m looking forward to the time change, running in daylight during the week, long runs and the start of my taper and a new WIAW theme courtesy of Jen at Peas and Crayons! But since it’s still February let’s spend one more day loving our veggies (of course we will continue to love them long past February though)!

Breakfast.

I thought I’d mix it up today with the breakfast! Sunday morning Michael and I went to our favorite yoga class and hit the grocery store on the way home so we could spend the whole day relaxing at home.  I was craving a delicious breakfast after a butt kicking hour and a half flow.  In particular I wanted some of these MorningStar Sausage Patties!

They are delicious and are much less greasy than the meat version. It went well with some homemade pancake and a fried egg. Filling and delicious!

Lunch.

Tuesday’s lunch consisted of some leftover pasta and sauce with a slice of Italian Bread. On the side I had some grapes, and a few Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies. I packed a Chobani Pineapple Yogurt too but never ate it! Are you noticing the trend with the yogurt?  I rarely eat it but always bring it because occasionally I am super hungry and need another snack.  It’s healthy and delicious and I like to have it on hand.

I also eat a banana everyday. It doesn’t usually end up in a photo because most days it goes in my morning oatmeal.  Sometimes though it’s delicious mid-morning or afternoon with some peanut butter.

Dinner.

Sunday night Michael and I made a delicious dinner! We had spent the day relaxing at home and were excited to watch the Oscars.  Our original idea was to make something Oscar style with crab meat but once we were at the store we decide crab cake sliders would be much better! We made homemade coleslaw to put on top, mashed sweet potatoes on the side and kale with toasted walnuts.  I recently tried Kale a week ago and have been hooked! I’ve tried it so many different ways and each one is delicious.

Everything was so good and it was nice to end the weekend with a good meal and some relaxation!

Dessert.

We made brownie sundaes to eat while we watched the Oscars! I was so relaxed and excited about them that I totally forgot to take a picture! We used apple sauce instead of oil in the brownies and topped them with some peanut butter ice cream, dark chocolate sauce, and whip cream! Yum!

What is your favorite weekend breakfast? Meat sausage patties or veggie style? Do you make a nice Sunday dinner to enjoy before the week begins? Did you watch the Oscars?  Do you ever forget to take food photos because your too excited to eat?!
