A Published Writer: A Hope, A Dream and Why it Should Be a Reality!

Standard

Hi All!  As you know I am a FitFluential Ambassador. FitFluential is partnering with a variety of magazines so FitFluential Ambassadors will be featured as writers and vloggers. I’ve always loved writing but my passion for it has really exploded since I’ve started blogging.  You could even say that I’m constantly “writing” to my readers all day everyday since  I can hear my thoughts reading as a potential blog post. Writing for a women’s health magazine would be incredible.  And the ultimate achievement as a healthy living blogger!

As a former Division 1 and Division 3 athlete and now a yogini and marathoner I bring a diverse background to the table.  While my athletic background starts when I was just a child, I really blossomed in my high school years.  I swam competitively and skied competitively.  My senior year of high school I went to the Junior Olympics for cross-country skiing and to New York State Championships.  While I chose to attend a Division 3 college I was able to ski Division 1.  I made that decision in order to have an inspiring and talented coach and to attend a college that would give me a degree in Chemistry that was well-respected.  I worked hard throughout my college career both academically and athletically.  I was All-American every year of college and was consistently achieving Dean’s List with my academics.  My senior year I peaked athletically.  I was USCSA Nordic Ski Champion! I was asked to join the New England Nordic Ski Association Development Team that year as well.

Cross Country Skiing USCSA National Champion!

By the following winter I had graduated college and was working full-time at General Electric Global Research.  I craved a “normal” life and was struggling to find a balance between training and working.  I ultimately decided not to compete that winter and took time to travel, have fun and make new friends.  Of course, I was always working out.  I did not know any different.  In the spring of 2009 I was laid off from my job.  In the midst of a job search and looking for a new direction I entered the lottery for the New York City Marathon.  I wanted to have a goal and something to look forward to and train for.  Not long after I was accepted in to the marathon I moved to Boston, MA to start a new job and life.  While in Boston I found a passion for yoga.  I spent the summer exploring yoga and training for my first marathon.  In November 2009 I ran my first marathon! I finished in a time of 4:03:51.

Mile 8

2009 New York City Marathon

I suffered from a severe case of Illotial Band Syndrome while training for the marathon.  Yoga helped to heal my body in the months after the marathon and restore balance to my body.  Since then I have run a variety of races from 5ks to half-marathons.  I set my half- marathon personal best of 1:41:38. I continued to practice yoga and learn everything I could.  In 2011 I ran my second marathon, the Chicago Marathon and finished in a time of 3:51:21.  Currently I am training for my 3rd marathon the Boston Marathon which I will be running with The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  In August I will start my yoga teacher training at South Boston Yoga and am currently studying for my NASM personal trainer certification.

Yoga!

I started blogging to share my experiences and love of running and yoga.  LiveRunLoveYoga is not a personal diary of my food and workouts but rather a source of information for runners and yogis.  My intent is for readers to learn something new with each blog post I share.  My readers like running tips.  They enjoy my tips for dressing properly in various weather conditions, my advice for fueling and carbohydrate loading to name a few.  My thoughtful and detailed race recaps make my readers feel as if they were right there beside me for the entire race or marathon.  My yoga followers come to read my detailed posts about specific aspects of yoga, like the meaning of Om and the positive benefits of yoga.  They seek out posts like my summary about the different styles of yoga and my reviews on new styles of yoga like Broga.  My thoughtful and well-researched responses to yoga in the news spark conversations between myself and my readers on both my comments and Twitter.  My followers who love both running and yoga have a place on the internet where they can find information about both and can share my passions.  I have readers who seek information on living a healthy lifestyle.  They like my What I Ate Wednesday posts and find motivation in my weeknight meals of grilled chicken and steamed vegetables balanced by more decadent and indulgent meals on the weekend.  They learn that balance is the key to staying healthy.  All of my readers benefit from my use of monthly goals and mid-month updates to see that staying healthy does require goals and hard work to accomplish them.  Each week more and more people find LiveRunLoveYoga and follow to learn more and stay inspired to remain active and healthy!

I should be selected to write for your women’s health magazine because I have been reading a variety of them for years! I’m familiar with the reader because they are just like the reader’s here on LiveRunLoveYoga.  With my diverse background and experience in skiing, training, yoga and running I have something to offer everyone.  My diversity will only continue to grow as I become a certified yoga instructor and personal trainer.  I have a “can-do” attitude and have a record of excellence so you can expect my best work every time and a variety to keep my writing fun and interesting!  And really, who doesn’t love some running and yoga?

Why do you think I should be given the opportunity to write for a health magazine? What about LiveRunLoveYoga do you love and keeps you coming back?  What would you like to see from LiveRunLoveYoga published for a health magazine?

And if it wasn’t exciting enough that I get to celebrate 100 posts I also got nominated for a blog award last night!!  Candice, from Forever is Composed of Nows nominated me!  She is one of my most active followers and I love seeing her daily comments and tweets.  Thank you so much for always stopping by LiveRunLoveYoga and thinking of me to nominate me for the Versatile Blogger Award!  And my first ever blog award!

With this award comes 4 rules:

1. Thank the person who nominated you in a post and link their blog!

2. Share 7 things about yourself (maybe even something you haven’t shared before)

3. Pass the award to 7 others

4. Let those 7 bloggers know you nominated them

So let’s move on to my 7 things!

1. I love the show Modern Family! I never miss an episode on Wednesday nights and always make Michael watch it with! I’m also completely obsessed with Gossip Girl! I’m all about Chuck and Blair living happily ever after!

2.  I went to undergrad at Clarkson University and majored in Chemistry.  And yes, I did this while being a multi season athlete.  It was challenging but completely worth it!

Graduation Day!

3.  I was laid-off from my very first job at GE Global Research.  It was upsetting, and challenging and a blow to my self-esteem.  But it was an experience I am completely thankful for.  Without being laid-off I would have never moved to Boston, ran my first marathon or discovered yoga or met Michael and be in the awesome place I am!

4.  I honestly can’t think of a food I don’t like.  I eat pretty much everything and like it all!

5.  I used to be a ballet dancer!  I took ballet for 12 years through high school.  I took it again when I worked at GE and was even in a recital.  I love it and think escaping to the music and counting the beats.

My Last Ballet Recital!

6.  I have an obsession with Mac and Cheese.  It is not healthy but I absolutely love it in the fall and winter.  If I see it on a menu, I want to order it!

7.  I love being busy! I love it so much that I tend to take on too much and am forced to challenge myself to fit it all in! I am a master at time management!

Now, my nominations for The Versatile Blogger Award!

Good News and a Mid-Month Update!

Standard

Hopefully you all enjoyed Michael’s marathon story, it was long but I found interesting and entertaining so hopefully you did too! I felt it was a nice change from the normal posts here on LiveRunLoveYoga.  So what have I been up to?  Well lots!  Let’s get you all updated!

The first is that I got accepted to run the Boston Marathon in April with Team in Training for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society! I am so excited about this opportunity and really excited to help this cause.  It seems like so many people I know have been impacted in some way by this cancer but I’ve also met some people who were able to beat the odds and fight for more time here with their friends and family thanks to the new treatment options out there.  I honestly hope that everyone who is diagnosed with this cancer can beat the odds and have more birthdays and that is in part why I wanted to run for Team in Training.

You may or not remember but about a year ago now, they changed the qualification times for runners for the Boston Marathon.  In part this was because more spaces were being given out to charity runners and runners ourselves are getting faster.  So more people were running for charity and more people were qualifying.  The marathon sold out in less than 8 hours in 2010.  Thus, the new rules were born.  Originally I was bummed as a runner about this, I was so close to qualifying with a 3:42 or better but with the new times it been increased to a 3:35.  Michael and I talked a lot about this.  He was grateful spots weren’t taken away from charity runners.  His sister had done it for charity and loved the experience.  We talked and talked and talked about this. And then one day Michael said to me, “Do you know how many people out there with cancer or another disease the marathon raises money for would love to run a marathon let alone take a few steps.  They are sick and they can’t.  But someone can raise money for their illness and give them legs for that day.”  I remember being in the car and looking out the window and thinking, wow.  So with that, I decided that I would run for charity if I missed the qualifying time at Chicago.  I’d help someone else with my love for running, I’d raise money to help find a cure for cancer and do it while running.  I’ve run two marathons, I had the glory of the day being all about me and what I accomplished.  I think now it’s time to turn over the day to help other people.  To help make the day about them.  And help find a cure for their illness.   Thankfully, Team in Training and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has given me this opportunity.

I’ve added a link to my fundraising page in the side bar.  If your interested in helping me, help those who are sick please visit my page.   Or if you know someone who has been affected by leukemia and lymphoma and would like to make a donation in their honor please visit the page.  75% of every dollar I raise will directly support research for a cure and provide financial assistance to families in our country struggling with the financial burden of treatment.  My goal is to raise $5000 and any little bit will help!

I’ll be blogging about the whole experience, I’ll share my survivor story with you all and all of my training ups and downs!  Your support is much appreciated!

Also here on LiveRunLoveYoga, I’ve been invited to be a FitFluential Ambassador! I’m super excited about this opportunity to work with Kelly Olexa and the rest of the FitFluential team to build a health living community.  The idea is to build mutually beneficial relationships between bloggers, the healthy living community and brands and most importantly promote a healthy living lifestyle!  They plan to host conferences and other healthy living events, all of which I am so excited to be a part of!  You can find out more about by visiting
http://fitfluential.com
or by clicking the badge on my side bar!

So that kind of covers all that is new and exciting here! I’ll keep you posted as more new and exciting things happen but for now, let’s see how I am doing on my November goals!

More Yoga! I’m doing really good with this goal! I’ve been practicing about 4 days a week still and am really progressing with more advanced poses and actually am feeling stronger during hour and a half classes.  As for the blog, I still haven’t posted as much yoga posts as I’d like. I have some in the works for you all so they should be up soon!

Finish my book!  Yes, I am still reading Bethenny Frankel’s A Place of Yes. The good thing though, is that I have made a lot of progress through it! I got to a section that really resonates with me and the pages are zipping by.  My Kindle says I only have 30% left to read, I think this is definitely feasible by the end of the month.  I’ve really enjoyed reading at night as a way to relax and unwind from real life.

Try cooking one new recipe a week! This has really been a big fail! I’ve been eating out a lot and opting for my favorite go-to quick meals during the week.  It is something I really want to get back in to though.  Since I found out I’m running Boston Marathon in April I want to remain as healthy and fit as possible until then.  I’d also like to shed about 5-10 pounds.  I think this will really help my running and take me to the next  level.  It  certainly won’t be easy but I’m going to try.  I need to start training in mid-January so this will give me about 2 months to lose the weight.

Study for Personal Trainer Certification! My materials came last week and I’ve definitely gotten going.  I’m still trying to figure out the best way, and time for me to study.  I think in the morning before work for 45 minutes or an hour will be best but I’ve yet to try it! Regardless, the studying has started and this is definitely in motion!

Balance life and working out! I’ve been doing a good job staying balanced with this but am starting to feel a bit stressed out by all that is happening.  Blogging is really taking off and becoming very time-consuming.  I’m not complaining because it’s very exciting and I’m grateful for the opportunities coming my way.  Additionally I’m trying to study for the NASM exam and now with the Team in Training activities life will be a bit busy.  I’m a little worried about fitting it all in and doing my very best with all of it but I am sure it will all work out for the best!

I’d say I’m doing well with all my goals minus cooking one new recipe a week! But I do intend to get better with that!

That’s all for me today! Sorry for the long post…lots to share!

Have you done a marathon or half-marathon for charity?  Any good fundraising tips? Are you part of FitFluential? How are your November goals coming along? What do you need to focus on for the rest of the month?
